Golden yellow Markhamia lutea trumpet flowers cluster among broad green leaves

Markhamia lutea

Native to tropical Africa from Ghana to South Sudan and Tanzania, this tree commonly reaches about 50 to 70 feet tall, although smaller shrubby forms occur. Fragrant golden-yellow flowers form clusters at branch tips. Their trumpet-shaped tubes open into five lobes, with reddish or purplish markings in the throat. The species inhabits wooded grassland, riverine forests, submontane forests, and evergreen rainforests. The flowers provide food for bees. Long, slender capsules split to release winged seeds. Its timber is used for furniture, tool handles and boat building, and the tree is planted for shade and windbreaks. Photographed in Colombia.
