Malvaviscus arboreus (Turk's Cap)

A large bush native to southern Texas down to South America. The flowers are found to be rich in bioactive antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer components​. The red fruit it bears is edible with a mealy taste. Additionally, the young tender leaves, fruits, and flowers can be consumed raw or cooked, and find their way into salads, herbal teas, and dyes. A popular ornamental in the tropics. Photographed in the eastern Andes mountain range of Colombia (Cordillera Oriental).
