Small red and green apples (Manzana criolla) in a large clay bowl
Malus domestica (pumila)

Originating in Central Asia, the apple tree has traveled far and wide to become one of the most cultivated fruit-bearing trees globally1. Its wild ancestor, Malus sieversii, still finds its home in Central Asia. China holds the title of the world's largest apple producer. The bowl of small apples are called Manzana criolla. Colombia imports over 90% of consumed apples, most from Chile. Colombia only grows a few varieties between 6,500 and 10,000 feet. Photographed in Bogotá, Colombia
