The stretch of coastline between the Magdalena River delta and the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta is a undeveloped, narrow coastal strip that runs along Colombia’s Caribbean coast west of Ciénaga and east of Barranquilla. This area is sometimes referred to locally as the Costa de Puebloviejo or playas de Ciénaga, but it does not have a widely recognized or official name. These beaches are rarely visited. To the south, the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, Colombia's largest coastal lagoon and a key Ramsar wetland. Along the coastal highway, rising sea levels have led to the die-off of vegetation on both the ocean and lagoon sides.
