Macleania macrantha
Native to Colombia, Ecuador and northern Peru, this low shrub grows in mountain rainforests, usually rooted in the ground and occasionally growing as an epiphyte. Its branches often arise from a swollen woody base called a lignotuber. Short clusters in the leaf axils bear three to fourteen tubular flowers. The corollas have five distinct angles and small lobes that turn back at the mouth. Five to seven prominent veins radiate from near the base of each leaf. The flowers develop into berries. Photographed in the department of North Santander, Colombia.
