Macleania insignis

Native from southern Mexico through Central America, this tropical shrub often grows on trees in moist, premontane cloud forests. It usually grows about 1.5 to 6.5 feet tall and develops a tuberous base. It belongs to the blueberry family, Ericaceae. Orange to reddish-orange tubular flowers have a narrowed throat and five conspicuous angles along the floral tube. Flowers appear singly or in small clusters, with short spreading lobes at the tips. Hummingbirds visit its flowers in Honduras. The rounded berries are translucent white. It is also cultivated as an ornamental in botanical gardens. Photographed in Colombia.
