Lycaste smeeana
Native to Central America, this naturally occurring hybrid orchid is a cross between Lycaste deppei and Lycaste skinneri. It grows on trees in wet tropical habitats and develops pseudobulbs. Individual fleshy flowers emerge on basal stalks, with spreading sepals surrounding the petals and lip. Its pseudobulbs store water and nutrients for successive new growths. Photographed in Panama.
