Lonchocarpus violaceus

Native from Colombia and Venezuela to the Lesser Antilles and eastern Brazil, it is a tropical tree known as jebe in Colombia. Its violet, pea-shaped flowers grow in dense clusters arising from the leaf axils. The compound leaves have translucent dots and usually nine to eleven leaflets. Its flattened, papery pods have a wing along the upper edge and contain one to three dark brown, kidney-shaped seeds. Photographed in the department of Atlantico, Colombia.
