Originating from the warm, sun-drenched locales of Central and South America, the Aztec sweet herb, is a perennial, creeper plant. The flowers subtly are fragranct. This herb is noted for its sweet taste, comparable to candy, and has been used as a natural sweetener in beverages, sweets, and desserts, recently gaining popularity as an alternative to stevia. In terms of its aromatic properties, it emits a pleasant honey-melon and minty scent, which makes it a favorable ornamental plant. Medicinally, the leaves have been traditionally employed in folk medicine for treating colds, persistent coughs, bronchitis, asthma, stomach upsets, and diarrhea. Such a diverse range of uses underscores its significance in herbal medicine across various cultures, especially in its native regions. Photographed in the department of Quindio, Colombia.
