Kalanchoe blossfeldiana (Christmas Kalanchoe)
Native to northeastern Madagascar, this evergreen succulent is widely grown as a flowering pot plant. Cultivated forms have red, pink, orange, yellow or white flowers, including double-flowered selections with layered petals. Flower-bud development responds to short days and long nights, allowing growers to schedule flowering for seasonal sales. In Singapore, its bright flowers make it a traditional choice for Lunar New Year displays. Plants can be propagated from stem or leaf cuttings. The species received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. All parts are poisonous to people and pets if eaten. Photographed in Bogotá, Colombia.
