An evergreen shrub native to Central America that can tolerate low temperature in the upper 20s. The leaves contain various phytochemicals like carbohydrates, pectins, flavonoids, tannins, essential oils, and minerals​​ and traditionally has been used to make a tea or utilized as a dye due to their ability to color the water deep blue or indigo when boiled.
