Justicia spicigera

Native from Mexico to northwestern Colombia and in the Bahamas and Hispaniola, this plant is an evergreen shrub with orange tubular flowers. Its leaves supply a natural dye traditionally used for crafts and basket decoration. Research has shown that juice squeezed from fresh leaves can dye cotton and other fabrics blue to purple, with the color changing under acidic conditions. Photographed in Florida.
