Juanulloa mexicana
Native from southern Mexico through Central America to Colombia, this climbing shrub or woody vine grows in humid tropical forests. It often grows on trees as an epiphyte or hemiepiphyte. The pendant flower clusters have orange, five-angled calyces surrounding tubular orange to reddish flowers. These calyces enlarge as the berry-like fruits develop. In Costa Rica, the species is recorded in primary and secondary forests, pastures and river margins. Cultivated for its persistent colourful calyces, it attracts hummingbirds. Photographed in Miami, Florida.
