Originating from the woodland areas of China and Japan. With rhizomatous roots, it grows up to 10-12" tall in forest margins and wet grasslands. Its bloom period occurs between April and May, showcasing a palette ranging from white and pale blue to purple, often with an orange or yellow crest​. The species has garnered attention for its ornamental appeal, especially in temperate regions. Cultivars, provide unique color variations and foliage and an Award of Garden Merit​.
