Ipomoea coccinea

Native to the central and eastern United States, this fast-growing annual vine has twining stems and heart-shaped leaves that may be lobed. Small red flowers have yellow throats and develop in clusters, followed by brown seed capsules. The flowers provide nectar for hummingbirds and butterflies. It grows along streams, roadsides and in thickets, and is cultivated on trellises or in containers. It readily reseeds and can become weedy in gardens. The seeds are poisonous if eaten.
