Hibiscus tiliaceus (Sea hibiscus)

Native across tropical and subtropical regions, this plant is an evergreen shrub or tree of sandy and rocky coasts, brackish riverbanks and mangrove margins. Its funnel-shaped flowers open yellow with a dark center, then turn orange, pink or red before falling later in the day. The plant tolerates salt spray and saline soils. Inner-bark fibers are used for ropes, fishing nets and hammocks, while its lightweight wood is used for canoes and household objects. It is invasive in central and southern Florida.
