Sabdariffa gossypiifolia (Flor de Jamaica)

Native from western tropical Africa to Sudan, Sabdariffa gossypiifolia, widely known as Hibiscus sabdariffa or flor de Jamaica, is an annual or biennial herb or shrub cultivated throughout the tropics. After flowering, the calyx enlarges into a fleshy covering around the seed capsule. In food cultivars, these red calyces are harvested fresh or dried for herbal teas, cold drinks, jams, jellies and syrups. They have a tart, cranberry-like flavor. The edible calyx is separated from the hard seed capsule before preparation. Young leaves are also cooked as vegetables. Photographed in Colombia.
