Goeppertia schunkei is a rare and visually striking member of the Marantaceae family, native to the eastern slopes of the Peruvian Andes, particularly in humid tropical and subtropical forests. This species produces a tall, upright inflorescence composed of overlapping, boat-shaped bracts in vivid shades of red to orange, from which small tubular white flowers emerge sequentially. The bracts often remain colorful long after the individual flowers have withered. Leaves are broad, lanceolate, and borne on long petioles, featuring the characteristic patterned venation typical of Goeppertia species. Due to its restricted range and the ongoing loss of Andean cloud forest habitat, G. schunkei is considered at conservation risk. Photographed in Florida.
