Gazania × splendens (Treasure Flower)

Developed in cultivation from South African plants, this low-growing perennial herb is a hybrid of Gazania rigens and Gazania rigida. The name is also used broadly for complex ornamental hybrids involving these species. Its daisy-like flower heads have yellow central disks and rays in yellow, orange, pink, white or bicolored forms, often with dark basal spots or lengthwise stripes. The flowers open in sunshine and close in dull weather. Creeping stems can root and form mats, making these plants useful as ornamental ground cover. They tolerate heat and drought and reproduce by seed as well as vegetatively. Garden escapes have been documented in Spain, New Zealand and coastal Algeria. Photographed in Bogotá, Colombia.
