Fuchsia macrostigma

Native to Colombia and Ecuador, this upright shrub grows in moist cloud forest on the western slopes of the Andes. Stout young branches carry broad, green leaves, usually in opposite pairs. Flowers have long red tubes, thick spreading sepals and broad, rounded scarlet petals. The large, four-lobed stigma is a distinctive feature. Ellipsoid berries have longitudinal grooves and a rough surface before they are fully ripe. Older branches develop finely fissured tan bark. Photographed in Colombia.
