Florisuga mellivora (White-Necked Jacobin)

The white-necked jacobin, is a distinctive hummingbird species notable for its striking appearance and widespread distribution. Adult males measure about 4.3 to 4.7 inches in length and weigh between 0.26 to 0.32 ounces. They exhibit a dark blue head and chest, a white belly and tail with black-tipped tail feathers, and a white band on the nape separating the blue head from the bright green back. Females are highly variable in appearance, often resembling adult or immature males, with green upperparts and a blue-green throat and breast with white "scales." The white-necked jacobin is found from southern Mexico through parts of Central America, South America, and on the island of Trinidad. It inhabits the canopy and edges of humid forests, as well as semi-open landscapes such as secondary forests, gallery forests, and coffee and cacao plantations. It is usually seen high in trees but also comes lower at edges and in clearings, typically ranging from sea level to about 3,000 feet, and occasionally up to 4,900 feet. Photographed in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia.
