Eucalyptus deglupta (Rainbow Gum)
Native to the Philippines, Indonesia and New Guinea, this evergreen rainforest tree is especially distinctive for its multicolored trunk. Thin strips of bark peel away unevenly, exposing bright green surfaces that darken through blue, purple, orange and maroon as they mature. Broad leaves are usually held nearly horizontally along the branches. Branching flower clusters carry numerous white to pale yellow stamens, followed by small, woody capsules that release tiny seeds. It is planted for timber and as an ornamental beyond its native range. The species is listed as Vulnerable. Photographed in Colombia.
