Erythrina variegata (Indian Coral Tree)

Native from Tanzania across the Indian Ocean region and tropical Asia to Australia and the Pacific islands, Erythrina variegata, commonly called Indian coral tree, is a deciduous tree that can reach about ninety feet tall. Its leaves have three broad leaflets, with the terminal leaflet largest; ornamental forms have green and yellow variegation. Dense clusters of large red flowers often develop on leafless branches. Long, cylindrical pods contain glossy, dark seeds. It is grown as an ornamental and used as a living support for pepper, betel and other climbing crops. Pruned foliage is used as livestock fodder.
