Erysimum x cheiri flower in full bloom showing four bright magenta petals with a pale green and white center surrounded by unopened buds
Erysimum x cheiri

Originated as an ancient garden hybrid, most likely between Erysimum asperum and Erysimum ochroleucum from southern Europe, and has long been cultivated across Europe and western Asia as an ornamental plant. It is a perennial species that is often treated as a biennial in gardens. The plant produces clusters of flowers with four petals, and while they are most commonly seen in shades of yellow, orange, or brown, cultivated varieties have expanded the color range. The wallflower is valued not only for its vibrant blooms but also for its strong fragrance, which intensifies during the evening. Photographed in Quito, Ecuador and Virgina.
