
Epiphyllum phyllanthus (Climbing Cactus)
Originating from Central and South America, the Climbing Cactus is an epiphytic cacti, known for its adaptation to thrive in tree canopies of tropical forests. The nocturnal blooms reveal slender, white, sweetly scented flowers that can stretch up to almost a foot long. These nocturnal blossoms are believed to engage in a nocturnal dalliance with hawkmoths, their primary pollinators, enriching the night with a strong, pleasant fragrance. Moreover, the fruits of their red to purple exterior encasing a sweet, sticky white pulp. This species has been hybridized extensively. Photographed in Mompox, Colombia.
