Orange Dyckia platyphylla flowers and buds line a red stalk against a rocky background

Dyckia platyphylla

Native to Bahia in eastern Brazil, this terrestrial bromeliad forms a rosette of thick, succulent leaves with spiny margins. The undersides are covered with pale, closely pressed scales. A slender flower stalk grows from the side of the rosette and carries a loose, unbranched arrangement of numerous flowers. The flowers have yellow petals, and flowering plants reach about two and a half feet tall. Photographed in Florida.
