Diospyros nigra (Black Sapote)

Native from Mexico through Central America to Colombia, Diospyros nigra is a tropical tree grown for its round fruit. Some trees bear only male flowers, while fruit develops on trees with female or bisexual flowers. The fruit softens as it ripens and its flesh darkens to deep brown. The ripe flesh is mild and sweet with a soft, pudding-like texture and is eaten fresh or used in desserts and drinks. Photographed in Colombia.
