Dacelo novaeguineae (Laughing kookaburra)

Dacelo novaeguineae is a terrestrial tree kingfisher native to eastern Australia and southern New Guinea. It has also been introduced to Tasmania, where it is now well established in forests, woodlands, suburban parks, and urban gardens. It prefers habitats with open understory near water but adapts readily to human-altered environments. This species is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a large and stable population estimated in the millions. It is among the most commonly observed birds in eastern Australia and can live near human settlements without difficulty, often perching on fences or rooftops while hunting.

Adults typically measure 16 to 18 inches in length and weigh between 11 and 17 ounces. Their heads are cream-colored with fine dark streaking, and they have a prominent dark eye stripe. The back and wings show a mix of dark brown and light blue patches, while the underparts are generally pale buff. Males and females are similar in appearance, though females are slightly larger. Dacelo novaeguineae is known for its loud, cackling vocalizations, which sound similar to human laughter and are used to establish territory. These calls are especially frequent at dawn and dusk and can be heard over long distances.

This species feeds primarily on small vertebrates and large invertebrates. It uses a perch-hunting strategy, swooping down to seize prey such as insects, lizards, snakes, rodents, and even small birds. Prey is typically stunned by being struck against a hard surface before being swallowed whole. Breeding occurs in tree cavities, often in eucalypt forests. Both sexes participate in raising the young, and sometimes helper birds from previous broods assist with feeding chicks.
