Cylindrophyllum calamiforme
Native to the southeastern Cape region of South Africa, it is a perennial succulent shrublet that forms compact clumps and has a thickened taproot. Its fleshy leaves are nearly cylindrical, with blunt tips and a rough surface; they range from blue-green to bright green and may be tinged red. Solitary pale yellow to cream flowers appear in spring. The hard, woody seed capsules have six to ten chambers and expanding keels within their valves. In the wild, it grows on stony slopes and flats over Karoo sediments. It appears to be rare in the wild, and its distribution is still poorly understood. Photographed in Lima, Peru.
