Crinum asiaticum cluster of long white strap-like flowers with purple tinges and extended yellow stamens emerging from large green foliage
Crinum asiaticum

Crinum asiaticum, commonly called poison bulb or giant crinum lily, is native to coastal and lowland regions of tropical Asia and the western Pacific. It thrives in humid, coastal environments, often in sandy soils. The plant produces striking umbels of up to twenty flowers at once, each flower with narrow white tepals that curve outward, sometimes showing purple or reddish bases, and long prominent yellow stamens. Individual flowers measure four to six inches in length and emit a strong fragrance, particularly in the evening. Crinum asiaticum is highly toxic if ingested due to the presence of alkaloids, but it has also been used in traditional medicine in Asia for external applications, such as poultices for inflammation or wounds. Its dramatic size, resilience, and showy blooms make it a popular ornamental in tropical and subtropical gardens worldwide. Photographed in Florida.
