Costus pictus is a species of spiral ginger native from Mexico through Central America, where it grows in tropical habitats. The plant typically reaches heights of 3 to 6 feet and spreads slowly through rhizomes, forming small clumps. The broad, lanceolate leaves are arranged in a distinctive spiral along the stem. The inflorescences form from overlapping bracts, which range in color from greenish to orange-red, each subtending a tubular flower. The flowers display flaring lobes in shades of yellow to orange. Variations exist where flowers show red or darker streaks, particularly in cultivated forms. Photographed in Panama.
