Conoclinium coelestinum, commonly known as blue mistflower or wild ageratum, is native to eastern and central North America. This perennial herbaceous plant reaches heights of 2 to 3 feet and spreads by rhizomes, forming colonies in moist soils. It is particularly abundant in lowland areas and riparian zones, where consistent moisture supports its growth. The plant produces clusters of small lavender to blue disc florets from late summer to fall, creating dense rounded flower heads with a distinctive fluffy texture. Unlike many members of the Asteraceae, it lacks ray florets, giving the inflorescence its uniform, misty appearance. Blue mistflower is noted for its extended bloom period, which can last until frost, and its ability to naturalize rapidly in favorable conditions. Photographed in Florida.
