Coelogyne pulverula with cream-colored flowers and brown-marked white lips along hanging stems

Coelogyne pulverula

Native to Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra, and Java, it is a large, clump-forming orchid that grows on trees and sometimes on rocks in wet tropical habitats. Its green, spindle-shaped swollen stems, called pseudobulbs, store water and nutrients. Each mature pseudobulb supports two stiff, dark green evergreen leaves. Long, hanging flowering stems can reach about three feet and carry up to sixty flowers spaced along their length. The flowers have cream-colored sepals and petals and a white lip marked with dark brown. Flowering commonly occurs in spring. Photographed in Florida.
