Cockfight

Cockfights are legal in Colombia as is gambling. The gamecocks are bred my selected hens and raised on a different diet than regular chickens and rosters. They can begin to fight from 7-13 months old. It appears you will get less than ten fights out of any one rooster, who can have their next fight in one to three weeks. The birds will have some of their feathers plugged so they will sweat less and not tire out as quickly. Combatants are determined by similar size and weight. The owners of the birds agree on the rules of the fight which can vary. The gamecocks are fitted with spurs by the trainer or handler of the birds who get a percentage of winnings. Depending on attendance the owner can make over $500 per win. The owner of the fighting ring gets cover charges, which are less than a dollar per person. Few women will attend these fights. There are often a lot of disagreements at cock fights over cheating even thought you may have one to two judges in the ring, Fights usually last until a gamecock dies, the owner stops the fight, or the fight exceeds 15 minutes. The dead birds are usually eaten.
