Cleistocactus winteri, commonly known as the golden rat tail cactus, is native to the mountainous regions of Bolivia. This cactus is distinguished by its trailing, cylindrical stems that can reach over 3 feet in length and are densely covered in golden-yellow spines, giving the plant its characteristic appearance. The stems often hang or cascade, making the species highly valued in hanging baskets and ornamental displays. The flowers are a vivid salmon-pink to orange-pink, tubular in form, and about 2 inches long, opening along the sides of the stems rather than at the tips. Cleistocactus winteri is cultivated as an ornamental plant. It was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for its ease of cultivation and ornamental value.
