Hanging clusters of rounded yellow, orange and red Citharexylum poeppigii fruits among broad green leaves

Citharexylum poeppigii

Native to tropical South America, it grows as a small tree in forests and more open habitats. In Colombia it occurs in the Amazonian, Orinoquian and Pacific regions. Its simple leaves grow in opposite pairs and have pointed tips, paler undersides and a pair of conspicuous glands near the base of each blade. White flowers are borne in branching clusters at the ends of branches or in the leaf axils. The bark is grayish brown and sheds in irregular flakes. In northwestern Mato Grosso, Brazil, it grows around riverine forest on both moist and drier soils. Photographed in Los Llanos (The Plains) in the department of Meta, Colombia.
