Ciénaga is located in the Magdalena Department of northern Colombia along the Caribbean coast, near the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta between the cities of Barranquilla and Santa Marta. The town is adjacent to the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, a large marsh and wetland. This is not a town worth visiting and the poverty is evident along the highway crossing the town.
