Cichlopsis leucogenys

Cichlopsis leucogenys is a forest-dwelling bird species native to the humid lowland and montane rainforests of northern South America. It occurs primarily in the eastern Andes of Colombia and northwestern Venezuela, favoring elevations ranging between 3,300 and 7,200 feet. This bird is typically found in the understory and mid-levels of mature, undisturbed forest and is considered difficult to observe due to its preference for dense vegetation. Though not widespread, it is regarded as locally fairly common in appropriate habitat. The species is not classified as globally threatened.

This species reaches approximately 7.5 inches in length and exhibits uniform dull brownish coloration with a pale lower mandible and distinctive white markings around the sides of the head. It is most often detected by its vocalizations, which include a series of rich, whistled notes, sometimes given as duets. Little is known about its breeding behavior or diet, but observations suggest it forages close to the ground for insects and possibly fruit.
