Originating from China, the garden chrysanthemum has been a cherished plant for over 30 centuries. The initial allure towards this perennial herbaceous plant was its medicinal prowess. It was revered for promoting longevity and alleviating ailments, with its use documented in ancient Chinese medical texts. Its aesthetic appeal led to a proliferation of cultivars,  to a staggering estimate of 20,000 to 30,000 cultivars today. The diversity encapsulates a myriad of flower colors alongside variations in flower head shapes and sizes. Chrysanthemum morifolium finds its place as a high-value edible and medicinal product in China, where its flowers infused in hot water are enjoyed as tea, known as Hangbaiju. The plant’s ornamental value is also widely recognized, with it being a pivotal flower crop globally. A testament to its horticultural merit is the RHS Award of Garden Merit​.
