Chambeyronia macrocarpa, commonly called the red leaf palm or flame thrower palm, is native to New Caledonia in the South Pacific. It can reach heights of twenty to thirty feet with a smooth gray trunk and long pinnate leaves. One of its most striking traits is the brilliant red color of its newly emerging frond, which gradually changes to green over a period of several days to weeks. This temporary transformation has earned it recognition as one of the most ornamental and visually unique palms in cultivation. The red leaf palm produces creamy-white inflorescences that develop into large clusters of bright red to orange fruits. It has been awarded recognition by the Royal Horticultural Society for its garden merit. Photographed in Florida.
