Chelone lyonii, commonly called pink turtlehead, is native to the southeastern United States. This species typically reaches two to three feet in height and produces spikes of distinctive tubular flowers shaped like a turtle’s head. The flowers, usually bright pink to rose-colored, bloom from late summer into early fall. The flowers of Chelone lyonii are unique in structure, with the upper petal forming a hood and the lower petal acting as a landing platform for insects. They contain a noticeable fuzz of yellow hairs within the throat, an adaptation that helps guide pollinators to the nectar. Photographed in Virgina.
