chaenostoma-cordatum
Chaenostoma cordatum

Chaenostoma cordatum, originates from South Africa, where it naturally occurs in rocky outcrops and grasslands at various elevations. This species is a low-growing, spreading perennial that has been widely cultivated for its ornamental value. The flowers of Chaenostoma cordatum are small and symmetrical, with five rounded petals forming a distinct star-like shape. They typically appear in profusion along the stems, with colors most commonly white but also cultivated in shades of pink, lavender, and blue. Commercially, this plant is highly valued in the horticultural trade, particularly in Europe and North America, where it is often marketed for use in containers, window boxes, and cascading displays. Hybrid cultivars have been developed to extend flowering periods and improve performance, with some selections noted for their ability to bloom continuously from spring until frost. Photographed in Ecuador.
