Centropogon loretensis

Native to Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, this upright shrub in the bellflower family grows about 6½ feet tall. It inhabits wet tropical forests, including forest edges, roadsides, and disturbed areas. In Ecuador, it is recorded between about 650 and 3,950 feet, from lowland rainforests to moist foothill forests. Its bright red tubular flowers turn orange-red as they age. Like other members of its family, it has milky sap and numerous small seeds. Its anthers are joined into a tube, a characteristic of its subfamily. Photographed in Ecuador.
