A close-up of a Centropogon medusa flower showing its elongated tubular red corolla with a bright yellow flared tip and curved green sepals, set against textured green leaves
Centropogon medusa

Centropogon medusa is a shrubby plant native to the Andes of Colombia and Ecuador, where it is distributed in cloud forests. The tubular corollas are bright red along most of their length with a transition into a vivid yellow at the lobed opening. The flowers can measure around 2 to 3 inches long and curve slightly outward from the stem. The sepals are unusually elongated and often spread in a spider-like manner behind the corolla, which contributes to the species’ descriptive epithet "medusa." Photographed in Ecuador.
