Cauca is situated in southwestern Colombia. The eastern part of Cauca is dominated by the Andes mountains where the capital city, Popayán, known for its colonial architecture and moderate temperatures lies. The western part of the department descends into the humid and warm Pacific lowlands, featuring dense rainforests and rich biodiversity. This region experiences heavy rainfall and a tropical climate. The central region, Cauca Valley, is an agricultural area ideal for growing sugarcane and coffee. The department is worth a visit yet is considered a dangerous area due to armed groups.
