Camellia sinensis (Tea Plant)

An evergreen shrub originating in East Asia. This evergreen shrub is widely cultivated for its leaves which are the raw material for a variety of teas including black, white, oolong, and green tea, with China leading the production. The leaves harbor bioactive compounds such as catechins and flavonoids which have been linked to various health benefits. The glossy evergreen leaves along with its fragrant flowers make it a desirable addition to gardens. Camellia Sinensis was awarded the 2023 Meritas prize, reflecting the plant's profound impact beyond its native boundaries. The plant is invasive in parts of Tanzania. Photographed in Bogotá, Colombia.
