Calliphlox mitchellii, commonly known as Mitchell's hummingbird or purple-throated woodstar, is a small hummingbird species native to Central and northern South America, typically inhabiting humid tropical forests, edges, and clearings where flowering plants are abundant. This hummingbird is found at elevations ranging from lowlands to about 6,500 feet, although it is more common at mid-elevations. The purple-throated woodstar is a diminutive bird with a vibrant appearance. Males are known for their striking, iridescent purple throats and greenish-bronze upperparts, while females have more subdued coloring with buff underparts and lack the vivid throat patch. This species consumes small insects, which provide necessary protein and nutrients. Currently considered endangered.
