Callianthe picta (Flowering Maple)

Native from southern Brazil to northeastern Argentina, this perennial shrub or small tree is cultivated for its hanging, bell-shaped flowers and maple-like, lobed leaves. The flowers typically have orange petals with reddish veins, while garden hybrids offer a wider range of colors. Some cultivars have golden-spotted leaves caused by a virus infection. Branches can root where they touch the ground, and new plants also grow from seed. It has naturalized in Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria, Australia, where dense colonies make it an emerging environmental weed. Photographed in Colombia.
