Caiophora cirsiifolia
Native to the high Andes of Peru and Bolivia, Caiophora cirsiifolia is an herbaceous perennial. This species typically grows in rocky slopes, scree fields, and high-altitude grasslands where conditions are cold, windy, and nutrient-poor. Its stems and leaves are covered with stiff hairs that can cause skin irritation, a common trait in the family. The solitary, bell-shaped flowers display a vivid orange hue, with five velvety petals surrounding a dense arrangement of stamens and a prominent central pistil. Photographed in Peru.
