Broughtonia sanguinea aurea is a distinct color variety of the Jamaican orchid, native to Jamaica. This variation is prized among orchid enthusiasts for its unique golden-yellow flowers, a departure from the typical red or pink hues found in the standard form of the species. Like the typical Jamaican orchid, it is an epiphyte, meaning it grows naturally on the branches and trunks of trees in warm, humid forests, where it receives dappled sunlight and ample air circulation. Flowers appear mainly in the spring and summer and are fragrant. The plant’s slender pseudobulbs store water and nutrients, an adaptation that allows it to survive brief periods of drought in its natural habitat. Photographed in Florida.
