Brassavola nodosa flowers have broad heart-shaped white lips and long slender petals and sepals against dark green leaves

Brassavola nodosa var. nodosa (Large-flowered Form)

Native from eastern and southeastern Mexico to Venezuela and the southwestern and southern Caribbean, this perennial orchid grows on trees and sometimes on rocks. Its roots cling to the surface, and each slender stem carries a thick, fleshy leaf. Large-flowered forms have broad white lips surrounded by long, narrow petals and sepals. The flowers release a sweet fragrance after sunset that attracts moth pollinators. Photographed in Panama.
